Veneers

A veneer improves the appearance of a tooth by covering the visible front surface with a custom-made, tooth-colored porcelain overlay. With proper care and good oral hygiene, a veneer has a lifespan of 5-10 years. A veneer is often prescribed for a tooth that is:

» Discolored or stained
» Worn down, chipped or broken
» Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped
» Fill the gap between two otherwise healthy teeth.

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

1. Cover Chips, Cracks, and Discoloration

There are many benefits of Porcelain Veneers.  Dental veneers are able to fix small cosmetic issues that are visible when you smile or talk. During your consultation, your dentist will be able to determine if you’re a likely candidate for veneers. For example, your dentist may recommend veneers to close slight gaps between front teeth.

If the tooth is fragile, your dentist may instead recommend a crown to restore the tooth to its natural strength and appearance. Either way, your dentist will be able to find the right solution for your smile.

2. Keep More Natural Tooth Structure

Once you remove enamel, it’s gone for good. Fortunately, we only need to remove a small amount of enamel from the fronts of your teeth to make room for the veneers. Since the veneers process is noninvasive, you may not even need anesthesia while your dentist removes enamel.

While porcelain veneers are only bonded to the fronts of your teeth, dental crowns have to fit over the entire tooth. This means that your dentist would have to remove more enamel for a crown than for a veneer.

3. Smile with Confidence

The veneers procedure takes two trips to our office. During your first visit, your dentist will remove enough enamel from the fronts of your teeth so there’s space for the veneers. Otherwise, the porcelain veneers will make your teeth seem large and bulky. Next, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab. To protect your teeth in the meantime, your dentist will place temporary veneers. When you return to our office, your veneers will be ready. Your dentist will make sure the tooth restoration matches the color of your natural enamel. That way, you can smile with confidence after leaving our office. We may also need to slightly adjust the fit of the veneers so they look and feel natural.

4. Prevent Tooth Discoloration

Practicing good oral hygiene and being conscious of the foods you eat can help your veneers last for years to come. For example, dental veneers can chip if you bite down on ice and stain if you drink too much coffee. If you take good care of your veneer teeth, you can expect them to last about 10 years.

5. Enjoy Simple Maintenance

While veneers are stain resistant, you’ll still need to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once daily to maintain good oral health. Also, make sure you schedule regular dental checkups with your dentist. This easy maintenance will help you keep veneers pearly white so you can enjoy a beautiful healthy smile. Since dental veneers are non-porous, they are able to resist permanent stains and cavities better than natural tooth enamel. In other words, minimal effort is needed to maintain veneers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are porcelain veneers, and how do they enhance my smile?

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-shaped shells made of durable porcelain that cover the front of your teeth. They are designed to improve the appearance of your smile by addressing issues like discoloration, chipped teeth, uneven spaces, and slight crowding. Veneers are custom-made to fit each patient’s smile and can dramatically enhance the look of your teeth. Since they resist staining and are long-lasting, veneers are a popular cosmetic solution for achieving a natural, beautiful smile.

What dental conditions can porcelain veneers correct?

Porcelain veneers can be used to correct a variety of dental conditions, including:

  • Severely discolored or stained teeth
  • Unwanted or uneven spaces between teeth
  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • Slight tooth crowding
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth that are too small or large

The process of getting veneers usually requires two visits, during which your dentist will take impressions of your teeth, prepare them by lightly buffing the surface, and bond the custom-made veneers to your teeth.
